America Has Gone to the Dogs....
Latest Figures on Animal Ownership in US
No, this is Not a Political Statement!
Well, it's official. America has gone to the dogs ... and cats ... and birds! The American Pet Products Manufacturer's Association has estimated pet ownership in the US for the 2007 - 2008 year, based on their recent pet-owners survey.
TOTAL NUMBER OF PETS
OWNED IN THE US (MILLIONS)
Birds 1.6
Cats 88.3
Dogs 74.8
Equine (horses) 13.8
Freshwater Fish 142.0
Saltwater Fish 9.6
Reptile 13.4
Small Animal (gerbils, rabbits, etc.) 24.3
Well, 4 H projects are still driving the large numbers of small animals (no pun intended)! It is interesting to note that cats now out-populate dogs in the US by almost 6 million animals. Perhaps this represents the increased urbanization of American families. Dogs, by and large, need more room to live happily in an urban setting.
I hesitate to opine that cats are more domesticated - everyone knows cats are just as tame as they want to be -- when they want to be -- how they want to be.
While I was still in the "school business," it became the rage for school principals to have aquariums in the waiting room outside their office - or in the office with the administrator. It had been proved that students and parents were calmed by watching the "goings on" in an aquarium.
One hundred forty-two million fish later, the stress level in principals' offices must be reaching epic proportions! Wow!
